John D. Rockefeller

By Kaycel Carlem
John D. Rockefeller “defined the structure of modern philanthropy” (Bringhurst). As a man who, adjusted for inflation, is the richest man in history, John D. Rockefeller did not merely spend his money on himself. On the contrary, he gave back to the community- and created a systematic approach to modern philanthropy. “His foundations pioneered the development of medical research, and were instrumental in the eradication of hookworm and yellow fever. He is also the founder of both the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University. He was a devoted Northern Baptist and supported many church-based institutions throughout his life. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life” (Collier and Horowitz).
John D. Rockefeller’s passion for philanthropy makes him a perfect asset to the TOMS team. As a philanthropist, Rockefeller would be very sympathetic to the TOMS cause. As the man who invented modern philanthropy, Rockefeller would be willing to help pass shoes to the impoverished in Argentina, and will even create a better method of doing so. As a shrewd businessman who founded and ran Standard Oil, he is also very knowledgeable about economics and finance, allowing him to turn a profit, and using that profit to give back to the poor. He would be a perfect addition to the TOMS team.

An aggressive businessman. A shrewd profit-turner. A caring philanthropist. Who possesses all of these qualities? John D. Rockefeller. As a philanthropic businessman, Rockefeller has done more than spend his life on amassing wealth. In fact, he has used his great wealth (over 1 billion dollars) to “create the foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific research.” (Fosdick). Just like what we want to do here at TOMS, Rockefeller is using his prowess in the business field to give back to humanity. We definitely would like John D. Rockefeller on the board here at TOMS, because he embodies exactly what we want to - philanthropic business.
As the founder and leader of Standard Oil, Rockefeller knows how to make business decisions. As such, his expertise will help us on conducting new policies and market strategies here at TOMS. Also, his pioneering approach to philanthropy is essential here at TOMS. "Rockefeller [is] well known in his later life for the practice of giving dimes to adults and nickels to children wherever he went. He even gave dimes as a playful gesture to wealthy men, such as tire mogul Harvey Firestone" (Chernow). We already have a program to give shoes to children in Argentina; Rockefeller will allow us to do better. He defined the structure of modern philanthropy, and we need his revolutionary ideals to lead us.
